Author: Anne Rice
Genre: Gothic, Horror, Vampire 🧛
This one is not going to be easy.
Hello, dearies! I barely remember the details but the general idea instead since it was such a long time ago that I read Interview with the Vampire, what I do remember is thinking how darkly different it was from the movie.
Of course, I had watched the movie before reading the book, but when I read this book, it was a real eye-opener for my young mind.
Anne Rice’s books are something else entirely, when you think it’s going to be a little dark she shocks with a twist that you didn’t see coming. And don’t get me started on the books under her penname, those are another league, I didn’t read them all but before, when I was younger and easily shocked, it was a good ‘wow’. Now, I think I could read almost anything.
Back to this one, Interview with the Vampire, has two main characters (I know Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, that’s probably what you’re thinking), but no. Louis and Lestat, and well, Claudia, who is a vampire-child, but that is the part where it increasingly gets creepy or dark, as she never grows old but her mind does. So you end up having an adult woman in the body of a child. This part of the book is so darkly, spooky, that in the movie they cast an older child and not the five-year-old of the book, so get your conclusions from that.
I don’t know if that’s considered a spoiler though, the book is about the interview that Louis has with some reporter, about his years being a vampire and how he lived with Lestat, but you keep going back in time with flashes of his life so you get the whole thing as if it’s actually happening and not a flashback.
When I read it, I was impressed by the whole book, I cannot say that is the best book ever, but it’s quite catching. It’s not like you’re going to fall in love with the main character because it’s not a romance, although, you could, if you like that kind of character, that’s just my opinion.
From the start, you know how it’s going to go, have you read it? The first part goes like this.
“I see… ‘ said the vampire thoughtfully, and slowly he walked across the room towards the window. For a long time he stood there against the dim light from Divisadero Street and the passing beams of traffic. The boy could see the furnishings of the room more clearly now, the round oak table, the chairs. A wash basin hung on one wall with a mirror. He set his brief case on the table and waited.
“But how much tape do you have with you?” asked the vampire, turning now so the boy could see his profile. “Enough for the story of a life?”
“Sure, if it’s a good life. Sometimes I interview as many as three or four people a night if I’m lucky. But it has to be a good story. That’s only fair, isn’t it?”
“Admirably fair,” the vampire answered. “I would like to tell you the story of my life, then. I would like to do that very much.”
“Great,” said the boy. And quickly he removed the small tape recorder from his brief case, making a check of the cassette and the batteries. “I’m really anxious to hear why you believe this, why you… “
“No,” said the vampire abruptly. “We can’t begin that way. Is your equipment ready?”
“Yes,” said the boy.
“Then sit down. I’m going to turn on the overhead light.”
Would you read that book? I think it sets the scene and you can continue from there. 🧛😎
I’m sorry if this one was a bit of a ramble, but I seriously do not remember scene by scene, I read it like ten years ago, and details get hazy when you only read once and move on and do not dwell on it. 😄
So, how about it, dearies? Would you recommend this book? I do, especially if you like gothic books. I’m more of a romance/fantasy/aliens/retelling and all of that, but I still read this kind of story from time to time.
