Hello, dearies!
Welcome to a new reader list… because I am nice and like listing random bookish things, so why not manga genres that you can choose from and get you started in reading manga OR simply what to read next…
I have checked some of the ones that I like, and added a few others that I haven’t read but would like to.
School Life
Hori-san to Miyamura-kun

Kyouko Hori is a popular high school girl who appears flashy but does well in school. She is caring and acts as a parent to her little brother since their workaholic parents are rarely home. With responsibilities like taking care of her brother and housework, she has no time for a typical teenage social life. One day, she meets her quiet classmate, Izumi Miyamura, who also hides his true self at school.
You might have heard already of this one, and I have talked about it plenty here on the blog. Or you might know it as Horimiya, the anime and full manga version.
Ao Haru Ride

Futaba Yoshioka aims to distance herself from popularity and boys after being shunned by her female classmates in middle school. In high school, she adopts an unfeminine persona to make friends, unaware that her first love, Kou Mabuchi, will return after years. Although she cherishes their past memories, she discovers that Kou has become cold and pessimistic, and he warns her that they cannot return to their previous relationship because everything has changed.
I only watched the anime for Ao Haru Ride, and I remember that I liked it. Although that was a long time ago, the manga is still on my list.
Ouran Koukou Host Club
Or Ouran High School Host Club.

Haruhi Fujioka is a diligent girl who just started at Ouran Academy. One day, she searches for a quiet place to study and finds an unused music room. Inside, she meets the members of the Host Club, where attractive boys entertain girls from the school. When Tamaki Suou, the club’s president, surprises her, she accidentally breaks an expensive vase. Since she can’t afford to pay for it, the club suggests that she work for them and become a Host herself. Mistaken for a boy, Haruhi must entertain female students while dealing with her fellow Hosts’ flamboyant personalities.
Yaoi
Not for the light hearted. IYKYK. Only +18, most of the time.
Sekaiichi Hatsukoi

Ritsu Onodera dreams of editing bestselling novels but is assigned to the shoujo manga department, at Emerald, instead. There, he faces a demanding boss, Masamune Takano, who unexpectedly kisses him to assist a manga artist. As Onodera adjusts to his new environment, memories of his first love resurface, particularly as he learns that Takano is the jerk who broke his heart, while Takano believes Onodera left him without explanation.
If you haven’t heard this title before, you probably are not into romance and Yaoi, but if you do, then of course you know the story of Takano and Ritsu, at least.
Twilight Out of Focus
Or Tasogare Out Focus.

Despite a rough beginning, second-year high school students Mao Tsuchiya and Hisashi Ootomo have learned to live together in their dorm for another year. They agree on three promises: Mao won’t reveal that Ootomo is gay and dating someone; Ootomo won’t fall for Mao; and they will respect each other’s privacy when needed. However, their school’s film club’s new project threatens to disrupt their arrangement.
TOOF is fairly new to me, but I haven’t finished the anime, yet. But I did enjoy the first two episodes.
Junjou Romantica

Misaki Takahashi, preparing for university exams, clashes with his tutor, acclaimed novelist Akihiko Usami, mainly due to their connection through Misaki’s brother Takahiro. Misaki’s suspicions about Usami’s interest in Takahiro grow when he finds a boys-love novel by Usami featuring characters like them. After an intense argument, they agree to a truce, only for Misaki to feel unexpected anger when Takahiro announces his engagement, as Usami reacts calmly.
Junjou at this point must be the classic of all Yaoi, at least in the circles of those who know. The age gap alone is for romance novel readers, but that aside, the evolution of the story and following Misaki get more mature is something that captures and holds your attention.
Dystopia
Attack on Titan

A long time ago, scary creatures that looked like humans came to life. These huge beings, called Titans, were a big threat because they hunted people to eat. Since they couldn’t fight back, humans built big walls to protect themselves. Now, life inside the walls is calm because there haven’t been any Titans for many years. Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert are three kids who want to explore the world outside the walls, inspired by stories they’ve heard. But their peaceful life changes when a giant 60-meter Titan attacks, showing them how harsh the world can be. That day, Eren promises to do everything he can to get rid of all the Titans, hoping that one day people can live outside the walls safely again.
I tried to read AoT once, but somehow I couldn’t pass from vol. 1 or 2, I can’t remember. I will try later on.
The Promised Neverland

At Grace Field House, the orphans lead a seemingly happy life under the care of a kind “Mama” and are assured adoption by age 12. However, after two top orphans, Emma and Norman, explore beyond the gates, they discover a dark secret about their existence and must collaborate to alter their fate.
I’ve never heard of this one, and if I have I don’t remember.
Akira

1988: It is World War III. Tokyo is decimated by a mysterious black explosion, unmatched in magnitude. 2019: Fast forward 31 years. Neo-Tokyo, built on the old city’s ruins, is a vibrant mix of neon lights and modern technology, filled with biker gangs, poverty, and revolutionaries. Here live Tetsuo Shima and Shoutarou Kaneda, two bikers who are both friends and rivals in the same gang. Wanting to prove himself to Kaneda, Tetsuo accidentally triggers the rise of a mysterious force that could change Neo-Tokyo and the lives of its residents—the government secret known as Akira.
Now, this one, I have not heard at all, doesn’t sound familiar. But well, supposedly it fits the category, have you read Akira?
Romance
I will include Josei here, and Shōjo.
Cheeky Brat

Being the eldest child of a large family, Yuki Machida had to become responsible from a young age, making sacrifices and dealing with disappointment. She becomes the basketball club manager to be closer to her crush, but when Shou Naruse joins the team, his talent and interest in her complicate things. Cold and stoic, Machida remains unfazed despite his relentless advances, which include kissing her unexpectedly and asking to grope her. Keeping her focus on basketball becomes increasingly difficult as Naruse does not hide his desires.
All-time favourite, there is something extremely appealing and well-structured about this story, don’t ask me why it is in my top 5 Manga of all time that I have read in the past ten years, I don’t know, it is simply a matter of taste, I guess. Sometimes you just like something. 🙂
NANA

Nana Osaki is strong-willed and ambitious. In high school, she joins a band and falls in love with a band member. Yet, she ultimately chooses her music career over her relationship and breaks up with her boyfriend. On her 20th birthday, she takes the same train to Tokyo as her namesake, aiming to become a top vocalist. The two Nanas, despite their different dreams, end up sitting together on the train and later sharing an apartment. This creates a deep bond as they support each other through love, music, friendship, and heartbreak.
The heartbreaker, this is one that makes me mad to watch or read now that I am older, and at the same time I still think it is awesome, and I still recommend it.
Those are my top recommendations to start, but there are others, of course. Such as: Fruits Basket. Kimi ni Todoke.
Paradise Kiss

Yukari Hayasaka, a high school student, faints after two oddly dressed people surprise her. When she wakes up, she finds herself with more strange-looking people in a basement studio of Paradise Kiss, a fashion club with four students from Yazawa School for the Arts. It seems like Yukari has been kidnapped, but the older students explain they want her to model for their fashion show. Yukari, who is busy with her senior year, angrily says no. However, she accidentally leaves her student passbook behind, and the leader, George Koizumi, uses it to persuade her to think about their offer. Inspired by the team’s passion, Yukari decides to help them. Now as their model, she has to manage her new duties along with her busy life. The more time she spends with George and the others, the harder it is for her to resist the exciting world of fashion.
You could say this one has a bit of everything, Fashion, messy relationships, and young-adult life choices (same creator as NANA, so you know you will be in for a lot). Though, don’t believe me I haven’t read it or watched Paradise Kiss.
Honey and Clover

I have seen this one a lot when looking for Josei, so there must be something to it.
Sci-Fi
Steins;Gate

What do you get when you cross a microwave with a cell phone? A time machine, of course! Self-proclaimed mad scientist Kyoma Hououin and the brilliant members of the Future Gadget Lab now possess the incredible ability to send text messages into the past. With such extraordinary power, will they leverage it for personal gain? To revolutionize the world? Or perhaps for something delightfully more sinister…
I loved the anime back in the day, I would have to watch it again now, but this was a favourite.
Ghost in the Shell

The manga follows Major Motoko Kusanagi’s pursuit of the cyber-criminal known as The Puppeteer, who engages in “ghost hacking” to control human minds. As Public Security Section 9 investigates, they discover that The Puppeteer is an advanced autonomous AI project, Top Secret Project 2501, developed by the Treaty Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This became more famous than Steins;Gate for some reason, but I haven’t paid enough attention to the story to be fully immersed.
And that concludes the list of Manga and anime genres and some suggestions for the day, did you know them, dearies? Have you added some to your lists? I sure did.
Thank you for stopping by and reading through the list, and don’t forget to check out other listings here on the blog, or reviews for some of the manga that I mentioned.
Happy Reading!
