Hello, dearies! 🐲
It’s been a while since I did a TBT, but recently I have been feeling that longing to re-read a good book and one that I have loved for a while is The Smoke Thief by Shana Abé.
This was the first book I read by this author I think 10 years ago or so, wow! I did not expect to think back and see that it has been that long since I first picked up and only after a small description and learning that it was about dragons, that was more than enough for me.
It was so worth it and I was completely awed by it, I couldn’t believe what I was reading and Shana rapidly became a favourite author, I consumed all the other books in the saga, series, universe, whatever you want to call it: Drákon Series.
I’ll give a quick description of this book next, but please be warned that it might contain some spoilers and nobody likes that, well, maybe it is just me.
The Smoke Thief
Genres: Romance. Shapeshifters. Dragons. Fantasy. Sort of Urban. Historical romance.
Year published: 2005
Page count: 352
Main Characters: Rue. Kit. Among others.
Hmm, why do I like it so much? Cannot answer that without spoilers, so here we go, this is the warning about some spoilers to come.
⚠️Some spoilers ahead⚠️
If you have read my other posts because you’re a fan of the blog then you know I’m not one to give spoilers. 😄 But this time, for The Smoke Thief… I am going further.
About the book
For this book, you first get sucked into it because of the running around in the woods, the Story of a young girl from what seems like a regular earldom lands until she is chased through the woods and then suddenly you are catapulted to the present day where we assume the same girl is now grown and living in the city.
That’s not all, you are now in a historic setting and begin a journey of discovery, hiding, cat and mouse kind of thing, and soon find out that our badass lead, Rue, has the power to shapeshift. But of course, this is a romance so when she is captured by her old kin, who she ran from, she is forced to go back and life begins to unfold on Darkfrith, England.
I know not much there, but I cannot help it. I like the book and the story in it so much that I want you to experience it for the first time. To discover why they are descendants of a group of people that came from the Carpathians, a place I learnt from these books. These are mountains in Central Europe and Southeast Europe, an actual place. But used fictionally here on the Drakon series.
It’s filled with mystery and The Smoke Thief is the perfect setting to start out the series. Shana is a true storyteller and I admire her as a writer. (*fangirling* party of 1).
In any case, this a book and series I always go back to even if it is to read a passage or the whole book (haven’t in a while) but I don’t get tired of it and it’s not just the romance part, trust me. It is the fantasy in it, it is how the Story is set up. It is one of my favourite fantasies.
You all know that Shadowhunter is at the top for me, but this is a different kind. Actually, don’t ask me to choose, I won’t. 😄
So, that’s all for this TBT. I wanted to chat about a book that I really love and share it again with you as it has been some time since last time I talked about it, and I don’t think I conveyed how much I liked it because it has been years and I am yet to read another fantasy romance to capture me as much. I’m sure that there are some that will try to get on the list because I have a lot of books on my TBR but this is still a favourite. I hope you will read The Smoke Thief or let me know if you have read it in the past, for me it was a 5 stars and that has not changed yet, I know it has a lower rating on Goodreads, but I think it is unfair. Then again, we all have our tastes.
I’m definitely done now, thank you for reading and sticking to the end, dearies! Don’t forget to like, share, and follow if you are not already.
Happy reading and re-reading! 🐲❤️
The smile that came to him now shone wicked with promise from all the way across the chamber.
He said, “No, love. From now on, your home is with me.”
