Friday Flashback: The Neverending Story

“People who have no hopes are easy to control; and whoever has the control has the power.”

the neverending story - movie and book

Woah! I went back a lot with this one. 📺

I rewatched this movie (The NeverEnding Story) countless time when I was a kid, could be one of the first fantasy ones that got to me.

It has everything…

But did you know that this is a book adaptation? Yes! It is for a 1979 novel, called The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, and it is German. 📖

I think I knew that before, but I learnt it again recently. The Neverending Story (German: Die unendliche Geschichte) is a fantasy novel by German writer Michael Ende, published in 1979. The first English translation, by Ralph Manheim, was published in 1983.

The film was released in 1984, so that was not a lot of time between book and film, you can tell it had its success back in the day. TNES cast was varied and included:

  • Barret Oliver as Bastian Balthazar Bux.
  • Tami Stronach as The Childlike Empress.
  • Noah Hathaway as Atreyu.
  • Moses Gunn as Cairon, a servant of the Empress.
  • Alan Oppenheimer as the voice of Falkor.
  • Sydney Bromley as Engywook.
  • Gerald McRaney as Barney Bux.

Fun fact, that some people think it’s true, there is no young Tom Cruise on this film, the movie that he was in around the same time that this film premiered is Legend (1985) not TNES.

Moving on… if you have not watched this awesome movie, here’s a trailer:

And if you’re thinking, there is something I heard on Stranger Things about a Neverending Story, yes, that was the song that they song there because it’s also great. This one: The Neverending Story • Theme Song • Limahl.

And if you have not watched Stranger Things and I just spoiled that, here’s the clip from the show: The Full Dustin and Suzie NeverEnding Story Scene | Stranger Things S3.

As for the story, here’s a cliff version of it, hopefully not many spoilers in it:

The story begins with a lonely boy named Bastian and the strange book that draws him into the beautiful but doomed world of Fantastica. Only a human can save this enchanted place by giving its ruler, the Childlike Empress, a new name. But the journey to her tower leads through lands of dragons, giants, monsters, and magic, and once Bastian begins his quest, he may never return. As he is drawn deeper into Fantastica, he must find the courage to face unspeakable foes and the mysteries of his own heart.

Now, if you ask me if I would rewatch the movie a thousand times now as I did in the past? I don’t know because it has been a while since I did and I would probably like to watch a newer version of it that keeps exactly the same feel of the original movie. 😆

Sometimes the remakes are not as good when it comes to the story itself, so, yes I want to watch it again, but it’s a been a while since I did, which does not mean that I don’t like it anymore or don’t recommend it because I do.

  • atreyu dragon falknor neverending story
  • old movies: neverending story
  • scenes from neverending story
  • book of the neverending story

So, that’s me on The Neverending Story, the movie, not the book because I have not read it. Have you read the book? Or watched the movie? To me, is strange if someone doesn’t know about it since it was so popular.

That’s all for now, dearies! Don’t forget that there other flashback and throwbacks here on the blog in case you want to remember old classics like this one or some books I have re-read and reviewed again.

Thank you for staying to the end, and hope to see you again. ❤️
