Marked by an Assassin [Eternal Mates #8] Book Review

That book was not what I was expecting… sadly.

book review marked by an assassin

Well, that was anticlimactic.

Welcome, dearies! 📖

I have finished reading another Eternal Mates book, number 8 this time. Marked by an Assassin. At first I was not going to read this one, but I wanted to know something so I went back to it, I should, maybe, perhaps, followed my first instinct.

Author: Felicity Heaton

Book Title: Marked by an Assassin

⭐⭐⭐

Book Series: Eternal Mates

Genres: Fantasy. Romance (sort of). Drama. Fighting. Drama again. Shapeshifters. Urban.

Page count: Around 200 pages.

I am not trying to criticise an author’s work harshly but this seemed like a book that was looking to fill in a space in the series and was written to keep it going and not giving much thought to the relation or the fact that this is supposed to be a romance novel and not a fight for your life novel.

That rant over. Marked by an Assassin is a good read if you know all the characters and how the stories in this series have been developing if not, you are going to be slightly lost and longing for more of Aya and Harbin. And you will stay longing it for it because there were about three hot scenes, or more like two and a half and that was it. The rest was interesting and as if building up to a big breakthrough only to end with I love you, the end.

It’s just that I read the first books in the series and I started reading the one after this one, and they read different. I don’t know if it is just me, the characters on this one, or if I’m here just for the dark elves, but this shifter one, not what I was expecting.

Notes from Reading Sessions

This is where it’ll get a bit more random, dearies! All of these notes were of innocence and not knowing how the book would end, lol. But also some quotes from the book.

spoiler alert tv show
  • “…two decades devoted to tracking down and killing the people who had attacked his pride. Archangel” How is this organisation doing crap still? Do I have to read to the last book to see if they go down?
  • “Was it better he gave her a swift death rather than her being subjected to Archangel’s demented experiments? A swift death was surely preferable.”
  • “Harbin snorted, managed to convince himself to stop with the fu**ng stretching, and sat up. ‘It’s called glass, Dumbass.'”
  • “Hartt was coming. And, f**, for once Harbin couldn’t wait to see Fuery.” At this point I was still confused with the H and H names.
  • “He didn’t need a damned mate. There was no time for love in his life, and bitches definitely didn’t deserve a drop of affection from him. Females were traitorous, backstabbing whores.” Well, at least he was honest about it, a bit strong but honest.
  • “He didn’t believed his teachers or his family when they had told him that as a male he would hit sexual maturity at a century old. He had thought it BS, a rough estimation of the time he would awaken as a fully matured snow leopard adult, able to breed…” Like 100 in a long time but sure.
  • “Victoriously. She had lured him into a trap. She had known he was tracking her, knew who he was, and she had gotten herself caught because she had known he would have to do the same in order to stay close to her and fulfil his mission.” Yeah, what? That was not what she was thinking before, was she? When she woke on her cell. Did the plot suddenly changed here? 🤔🤨
  • “and then his lips had captured hers and she had been thrown back close to forty years to a fumbled first kiss in a snowy mountain village.”
  • “His pointed ears flared back against overlong blue-black hair that he had drawn back to reveal them, securing the top half into a ponytail.” So, like Legolas? 😸
  • “The darkness had swallowed Fuery, but it had been Hartt that had drawn him back to the light, and now Fuery looked lost and confused, as if he couldn’t recall what had happened during the time…” Is this an intro to Hartt and/or Fuery? Instead of Harbin going to save Aya? Because it was a bit random.
  • “He was her mate. Her male. Her fated one. Hers.”
  • “The scent of the Archangel huntress who had betrayed him.” I knew it. How else would they trick him? Probably something like what happened to Vail.
  • “…disappearing into her bare skin and leaving her standing before Harbin. Naked” How come? When she shifted back with the witches she was dressed, wasn’t she?
  • “When he had spoken of Cavanaugh having children, there had been a glimmer in his eyes, one that said he had considered such a future for himself.” When was that? No clue.
  • “So why did it hurt so much to hear him say he didn’t want her as his mate?” That’s not what he said.

He said: “But that doesn’t mean I’m right for you, Aya. I can’t give you what you need… what you deserve.” Just saying, it’s not the same as saying I don’t want you.

  • “Time hadn’t been kind to the huntress, the seventeen years since they had last seen each other taking their toll on the mortal”. First, she was mortal. Second, how old was she? Seventy? Fifty?
  • “And had subjected her and others to torturous experiments…” And after the experiments, Aya still worked for Archangel? Solely basing her trust in the fact that they told her they changed management? 😮‍💨

“He was a perfect blend of boyish charm and deadly assassin, intoxicating her and luring her back under his spell.”

“A love that would always grow stronger…”

What? This is the ending? 🧐😵I thought I had another chapter to go at least. It’s like there was no fulfillment towards the end of the book. Suddenly, yes, they are mated, the end. I spent way too long reading this one. I came from Bleu to it expecting more…

eternal mates book 8

That was all from this one, you can read without spoilers from here on…

Though, I don’t have much else to say about Marked by an Assassin. Only that I had started reading Possessed by a Dark Warrior (next review), got confused for a second and went back a book in the series but I should have stayed on book 9 and skip 8 for the time being, it would have been fine. Sigh, I don’t like to give 3 stars but I couldn’t bring myself to raise it any higher, it was not the same as the others about elves and demons from the first books.

So, that’s all. Hope you enjoyed it and will come back for more reviews, don’t forget to check out the main list book reviews by authors, you can find your favourite there for sure. And if not, let me know, I might have read it and forgot to review it or maybe I have not read it and can add it to my TBR.

Thank you for staying to the end. Happy Reading, dearies! 📖
