Hi, dearies!
Welcome back to a Spoiler Time Sunday, which already has multiple entries, in case you want to spoil your fun or just know more about a favourite book, anime, show.
This Sunday will be for Furuba or Fruits Basket, which became a favourite of mine after watching about three episodes of the 2019 Anime Version of the manga, I was hooked, I was sold after the first episode even. The intro, I was there, in it.
Now, you see I am a fan of it, I like it. But I am a realistic person, and I know that if you look to close into things (shows, stories, character’s background) then you really get like: wow, seriously? Is that truly how it is?
So, today, I am doing that with Furuba because I enjoy rambling about these random things.
First off, this is my warning, there are spoilers as per the whole point of this blog post, spoilers ahead, this is my warning.
The Thing About Furuba is…
Shigure-nii
As you might know or might have seen online, Shigure is a favourite chracter despite the fact of how spoiled, selfish, and almost sadistic he is… maybe that’s why. *coughing and clearing throat*
So, Shigure, basically, completely, had a dream when he was let’s go with 8 years old about the person who would/could be the love of his life, his soulmate, whatever, before they were born, when they were conceived, literally. And then he proceeded to be in this person’s life, all their lives, waiting until they were old enough to be with him, let’s say, he waited until the person was of legal age. Just putting it as it is without romanticising it.
I’m not criticising his toxic relationship (because it was unhealthy the way they treated each other), I’m saying is there, it is what happened, don’t try to spin it another way from its core.
That aside, I love this story, and eagerly watched. If you try to justify all the details of it with insecurities and wanting to be loved, and needing that special someone.
Shigure + Mayuko
Now, this is not so bad, it happens, people want to feel something. But Mayu-chan was in love with Hatori and Shigure knew it, so he decided to tell her, hey let’s date for a while… (*whispering* and she said yes because why not?). Unhealthy.
Tohru’s Dad and Mom
Tohru’s mom was in high school when she married her dad, who was an early-retired high school teacher because (his words) he couldn’t teach high school or Tohru’s mom. And Kyoko even teased him about it, and the age difference and asked him if he had a thing for Lolita. It’s all there, you can’t hide from it. Go watch the OVA. Or read the manga, is more explicit still.
That aside, they loved each other and had a wonderful time together until he died of a freaking flu? Come on. Poor Kyoko. Ugh, don’t get me started on those types of plots.
Moving on.
Momiji Sohma
One of the most tragic stories, like oh my god, horrible.
His mother doesn’t remember him, rejected him, then his dad went and told him to please leave and then started a new family with Momiji’s mom, had another child, and he was raised by no one, a servant maybe. His father didn’t even give him all that much attention, and eventually asked him to be further apart from his new family.
Terrible!
But Momiji is a lovable character that you want to protect and cherish.
Kyo Sohma
Kyo-kun is just as painful to witness though, as much as Momiji but less than our lead boy, however, due to their personalities, Kyo seemed to suffer more than Momiji because Momiji faced everything with a smile and forward mentality, now, Kyo was suffering, too, no mother, rejected by his dad, by everyone in the Sohma family except, except by his Stepdad, who raised him and tried to show him a better world despite all the hate he received, wow, sometimes I shock myself with how I feel about some characters 😂.
In any case, Kyo’s adoptive dad and Shishou: Kazuma Sohma (*hot dad*, had to be said). He was the kind soul who somehow tried to raise Kyo is a loving environment, even if he rejected the idea from time to time. But it did help, I suppose, and Kyo was kinder for it later on. Less volatile, but also after he met Tohru and fell for her.
And, that’s all I have for now about Fruits Basket, thank you for reading, dearies!
Don’t forget to like, share, comment, and let me know if you like this anime or the manga. Totally worth it to rewatch.
