Or as I knew it before in the Spanis version: El Misterioso Mr. Brown.
Author: Agatha Christie
Genres: Detective, Crime Novel
I can’t remember when I read this book, maybe over ten years ago or more, but I do remember this, I liked and thought it was cool to get into suspense and think, oh what’s happening, uuh what’s that?
It was nice. But The Secret Adversary is about looking for clues, following up people, and finding them.
That’s all I have for you, lol. 😄
Have you read this book? Here are some of the notes from it.
The Secret Adversary
In the vibrant setting of 1919 London, the streets echo with the footsteps of demobilized soldier Tommy Beresford, a man fueled by unyielding determination. A chance encounter reunites him with his childhood friend and fervent war volunteer, Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley. With their spirits unyielding, they forge a formidable partnership as "The Young Adventurers, Ltd." As fate would have it, their very first client, a mysterious figure named Mr. Whittington, presents Tuppence with an offer that reeks of curiosity and secrecy. Intrigued yet cautious, Tuppence finds herself in a labyrinth of enigma when she assumes the alias "Jane Finn" – a name that holds untold significance. As the story unfolds, secrets of a missing British agent, a clandestine treaty, and an enigmatic foe known only as "Mr. Brown" begin to entangle our audacious duo. Amidst the relentless pursuit to find Jane Finn, they encounter another player in this treacherous game of intrigue - her cousin, Julius Hersheimmer, an American magnate whose fortune knows no bounds. Brace yourself for an exhilarating journey as Tommy and Tuppence navigate the shadows of espionage, unmasking the truth as they race against time.
Sir James finds a Jane Finn and she tells them where she hid the treaty. But they find a message from Mr Brown instead. Tommy discovers a photo of Annette and realizes that she is the real Jane Finn. The Jane Finn they met was a fake. Tommy gets a copy of the telegram and sees that the destination was changed. Tommy and Albert go to the correct destination.
In the elegant residence of Sir James, Jane recounts her thrilling tale. With the utmost cunning, she hatched a plan to outsmart the cunning Mrs Vandemeyer. Deftly swapping the original packet with empty sheets, Jane concealed the valuable treaty within the pages of a seemingly innocuous magazine. Along her journey from Ireland, she faced a perilous mugging and was subsequently held captive in a mysterious Soho house. Sensing danger, Jane cleverly feigned amnesia and skillfully communicated solely in the language of French. Undeterred by her circumstances, she ingeniously stowed the treaty away in a concealed compartment behind a seemingly ordinary picture frame in her room. Throughout her stay, she effortlessly assumed the identity of "Annette" with unwavering determination. Tuppence, displaying her shrewd intuition, suspects that the enigmatic Hersheimmer is, in fact, the elusive Mr Brown. Sir James, in agreement, reveals the shocking truth that the real Hersheimmer met his tragic demise in America and that his doppelgänger, posing as him, was responsible for the demise of Mrs Vandemeyer. With unwavering resolve, our protagonists hasten to the Soho residence, where they successfully retrieve the precious treaty. It is at this moment that Sir James, unmasking himself as the true Mr Brown, unveils a sinister plan to eliminate them, cleverly framing himself and escaping suspicion. However, unyielding in their pursuit of justice, Julius and Tommy, who had stealthily concealed themselves in the room, forcefully apprehend Sir James. In a tragic turn of events, the malevolent mastermind succumbs to a swift and fatal poison concealed within his ring. This compelling evidence will undoubtedly convince Mr Carter of his long-time companion's guilt, bringing this thrilling saga to a dramatic conclusion.
And that’s pretty much it, though I’m not giving away the very end, I think this it’s what you’ll find in most cliff notes around. I need it too, to remember some parts of the book.
But that’s all for now, I’m sorry for the short one here but sometimes that’s all we need. This was a TBT, so I hope you enjoyed the reminder if you have read it before or if you found a new book, then YAY! You can like and share so others know too, just a thought.
Thank you for reading to the end! 📚💞
